On Monday 9th October 2017 a World Cup qualifying match took place. The stakes were huge as whoever won this crucial match went through to the qualifying rounds of the group stages. However, if the match ended up as a draw, both teams could have been out of the tournament and spent their summer on the sofa.
Wales were all over Ireland for large parts of the game but Ireland managed to hold on. Then, in the 57th minute, a careless moment from a Welsh defender from Irish pressure resulted in a goal for Irish midfielder James McClean.
News went around the stadium that Croatia were leading Ukraine 2-0 meaning that Wales had to win the game if they were to have any hope of a World Cup place in Russia with only 15 minutes to go.
However Ireland held on for the win as they head to the play offs, as for Wales it is another miserable World Cup disaster after missing out on the 2014 World Cup.
